chapter 7. overview

The EcoScope platform, powered by GeoMachine (https://geomachine.com/), offers users interactive access to the underlying climate and geophysical data used in ecosystem models and management scenarios. This comprehensive dataset includes global environmental parameter forecasts from 1950 to 2100, encompassing various spatial and temporal resolutions, as well as different socio-economic and greenhouse gas emission scenarios.

EcoScope platform data is sourced from open repositories such as Copernicus, EMODnet, NASA Earth Exchange, and Aquamaps, then updated and reprocessed for use in ecosystem models. Users can explore data through OGC standard services, adhering to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) geospatial information principles. These services include:

• Web Map Service (WMS): For serving georeferenced map images.

•Web Map Tile Service (WMTS): For serving pre-rendered georeferenced map tiles.

•Web Feature Service (WFS): For querying, editing, and updating geospatial vector data.

•Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW): For accessing metadata catalogues to discover and evaluate geospatial data resources.

Georgios Sylaios (Democritus University of Thrace)

ABOUT Georgios
Georgios Sylaios is a Full Professor at the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), Department of Environmental Engineering, Xanthi, Greece. He was the Chair of the Department from 2014 to 2016. Sylaios is the Director of the Laboratory of Ecological Engineering and Technology. He is a physical oceanographer by training, with extensive experience coordinating European and nationally funded research projects. He has coordinated 36 research projects with a total DUTH budget of approximately 6.5 MEuros. He coordinated the ODYSSEA, a Blue Growth research project funded by Horizon 2020 with a budget of 8.4 MEuros. His publication list includes ~300 scientific publications, 110 of which are published in peer-reviewed international journals. His works have received >2,800 citations (h-index 29). Sylaios research interests lie in the field of digital twins of marine and maritime activities; marine renewable energy systems (wind farms, wave energy systems, salinity gradient energy systems); environmental monitoring and operational modeling of marine and coastal environments; hydrography and biogeochemistry of oceans and coasts; hydrology and nutrients management of streams and rivers (mostly heavily modified); precision irrigation and water saving technologies at farm scale; numerical models nesting, coupling and predictive operation; big data management, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neuro-fuzzy modeling.

Nikolaos Kokkos (Democritus University of Thrace)

ABOUT Nikolaos
Nikolaos Kokkos is a Research Assistant at the Laboratory of Ecological Engineering and Technology, within the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), Greece. He holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D. in Oceanography, both from DUTH. His research expertise lies in physical oceanography, with a particular focus on the modeling of coastal and open-sea circulation, stratification–mixing dynamics, and the analysis of satellite remote sensing data. His current work emphasizes environmental monitoring and the operational modeling of marine and coastal environments, as well as the development of integrated tools for marine system assessment. He is also engaged in big data management and full-stack development to support research infrastructure and applications. He has contributed to 22 peer-reviewed journal publications and 12 international conference proceedings and has actively participated in 24 international and national research projects.
